DMJX students win at CPOY Multimedia categories

Cecilie Rolvung and Miles Lilley have won Gold in the Multimedia Short Documentary category at the 79th College Photographer of the Year.
Sigrid Ellesøe and Thea Tønnesvang have won Award of Excellence in the same category.
Rhiannon Johnston, who is currently an exchange student at Photo 1 DMJX, has won Award of Excellence in Multimedia Online Storytelling.

Gold to “Sophie’s Eyes”

Sophie was born with tiny eyes, an eye condition, which means that she has always had impaired vision. Seven to eight years ago, her vision began to deteriorate drastically, and it has only gone downhill since. Today, Sophie is 29 years old and she has 2% vision in one eye and no vision in the other. Sophie is trying to navigate life on the brink of blindness, while doctors cannot tell her how long she will have her remaining vision. In a life filled with adversity, she finds comfort in her helpful guide dog, Fellow.

Award of Excellence to “Push Start”

The twin brothers Karl and Thomas have just entered their teenage years and are impatiently waiting to turn 15, so they can get a driver’s license, like their other friends on the Island Fur. While dreaming about the Puch Maxi or Derbi Senda they will soon buy, they make reparations their broken scooter and test-drive it in the fields behind their parents’ house. They are still children for a while, but adulthood is just around the corner.

Multimedia Online Storytelling
Award of Excellence to “The Road Home”

Rhiannon Johnston has won an Award of Excellence for her online story The Road Home about long-haul trucker Bobby Coffey-Loy, who juggles driving up to 6,000 weekly miles while caring for his terminally ill mother. Seeking connection and understanding on the road, Bobby turns to the LGBTQ+ Trucking Network, a support system he founded with his husband Ricky. Rhiannon Johnston has made the story during her study at her home university Western Kentucky University. She is currently an exchange student at our Photo 1 programme at DMJX in Aarhus. Screen shot from the documentary.

CPOY is the world’s oldest competition for student photographers. It was founded in 1945 and is administered by The Missouri School of Journalism. The 2024 competition is the 79th of it’s kind.
