Project description of Amelie Sachs final project:
The witch hunts of the early modern period are among the darkest chapters in European history. Measured in terms of the country’s population, Denmark was one of the most important regions for witch hunts. Driven by the mostly negative image of the witch as an unmarried, childless, old woman, Amelie Sachs set out to find contemporary perspectives on the subject of witchcraft during her stay abroad in Denmark. An everyday world opened up in which women express their connection to nature and feminist ideals and reclaim the concept of the witch for themselves and see it as an act of self-empowerment. According to the claim “We Are The Granddaughters Of The Witches You Could Not Burn”.

Portrait of Maria Lisette Jacobsen, a shaman. She feels connected to the Nordic mythology and especially to the figure Vølve, who carries a stick in many illustrations.

“We Are the Granddaughters of the Witches You Could Not Burn” covers different cont
emporary perspectives on modern witchcraft in Denmark in times of a growing interest in spirituality. Iben wears traditional shamanic clothing, inspired by the figure of Vølve. She practices mostly in the dark, because then she can contact the spirits more easily.

Amelie Sachs and the Neighbours Cafe organized an event with the ethnologist Victoria Hegner from the University in Göttingen, who researched on the witch community in Berlin. And we invited two witches from Germany to discuss their understanding of witchcraft with use and listened to their journey and struggles in dealing with considering themselves witches in society. Photo from the event: Amelie Sachs.

The outdoor group exhibition “Identity, Courage, Love“ opened in Hannover on June 16 and runs till June 25.

The term „witch“ still has a very negative connotation for Maria, as it is often equated with the figure of the fairy tale witch. Photo from the project by Amelie Sachs
