Pressefotografforbundet (The Danish Press Photographers’ association) has announced the six single images that are nominated to become the 2024 Best Press Photograph in Denmark. Two of the nominated photographers are DMJX-students Signe Lægsgaard and Martin Thomas Ford.
After the flood. Something that looks like an absurd theatre scene is taking place at the local music school in the town of Massanassa, just outside Valencia, Spain. A soiled grand piano is chopped into pieces with an axe and hammer so that soldiers in safety suits can carry it out into a container. The room, which was previously used for performances and concerts, is located in the basement, and was therefore converted into a brown aquarium when the water came. Now it must be emptied of inventory, mud and sludge. Photo: Signe Lægsgaard/DMJX/PolitikenIt gives strength to have to carry. Freja is in a warm bathtub in Lukashuset, a children’s and young people’s hospice in Denmark. A physiotherapist massages her arm while her older sister Nova plays next to her. As she lies there, she looks like all other three-year-olds, but Freja has a rare genetic defect, epilepsy and involuntary muscle cramps, and she needs help with most things – eating, drinking and lifting her head. Until February 2024, her family tried to manage things themselves. Photo: Martin Thomas Ford/DMJX/Jyllands-Posten
Both nominated pictures have been made during the students’ internships. Signe Lægsgaard is currently interning at Politiken, and Martin Thomas Ford interned at Jyllands-Posten in the fall 2023 and spring 2024.
2723 images and 54 videos by 151 different photographers were submitted for the competition.
The Danish Picture of the Year is organized by Pressefotografforbundet (The Danish Press Photographers’ Association) and this year’s winners will be announced at the award ceremony on March 7 at The Royal Library in Copenhagen.
