Wednesday, November 13, Robert Nickelsberg visited DMJX and gave a lecture based on his recent book Legacy of Lies.
Robert Nickelsberg worked as a Time magazine contract photographer for nearly thirty years, specializing in political and cultural change in developing countries. In his talk at DMJX, he showed images and talked about his work from El Salvador made for Time between 1981–1984.
in that period, The United States sought to prop up El Salvador’s right-wing military government as a backstop against home-grown insurgents and rising Soviet and Cuban influence. Its role helped fuel a lethal 13-year civil war.
In his lecture, Robert Nickelsberg shared both the background stories for some of his pictures and talked about how to work in the field in the eighties and now. He compared the situation back then to some of the present conflicts in the world.
