In 2020, Mohamed Mahdy was in military service, which is mandatory for serviceable Egyptian men. He managed to bring a camera phone, which he used to document fragments of his daily life as a conscript. There were also memories that could not be photographed, but which were written down in the diaries he kept during this time.

In the exhibition 455 Days, Mahdy tries to revisit these memories. By framing a picture of the past, questions also arise about what the truth is. The exhibition highlights the tension between Mahdy’s photographs, his other memories and the objects he collected during his time in the military. 455 Days stages different memories and makes us wonder which stagings credibly convey reality.

Mohamed Mahdy made the first draft of the 455 Days project during his study as an ECCA Scholarship student at DMJX in 2022.

The exhibition is curated by Farida Youssef.
