DMJX students won a record high number of 19 prizes in the still picture and multimedia categories at this year’s College Photographer of the Year (CPOY), which has been judged during the past weeks at the University of Missouri. The DMJX students won first prizes in six out of the 16 different still picture categories and in two out the four multimedia catogories.

Multimedia: Standalone Group Story or Essay
Gold – Emilie Lærke Henriksen and Marius Renner Christensen
Videodocumentary “I am afraid of dying” by Emilie Lærke Henriksen and Marius Renner Christensen. The two students made the story as exchange students at Lebanese American University in Beirut in the spring 2020. Due to the Covid-19 lock down, they followed the exchange study from Denmark.

He’s in a unit for patients who have been tested positive for covid-19, but who are hospitalized for other reasons. A large group of forest rangers has shown up to their colleague Liviu Pop’s funeral. He was murdered by the mafia on the 16th of October 2019 when he was patrolling the forest. During the last couple of year’s more than a 100 forest activists and rangers have been assaulted, and 6 have been killed in the fight for preserving the forest. Rogoz, 19. October 2019. A small wood factory in the village Moldovita. The village is located in the northern part of Romania close to the forest. There are about 5000 inhabitants, and almost everyone is somehow involved in the logging industry, whether they want to or not. Award of Excellence – Marius Christensen
Like other young men Bangis has dreams for his future. But in the least developed country in the world the way from dream to reality is hard to pave. Bangis has comitted a crime and therefore he is prisoned in Agadez, Niger. But where prison often is a dead end, the criminal teenager has chosen a new path for his life by being part of a rehabilitation project in the Prison Civile d’Agadez. He is taught a craft with the aim of being independent upon release. With the reality on the other side of the prison wall sometimes being rougher than the one they are facing inside the prison, it is paramount to find employment. The point of the rehabilitation project is to prevent migration by helping the juvenile delinquents to open their own shop in Agadez – a city in crisis with no rightful employment found. “When I was 8-12 years old I was sexually abused by a friend of my father’s. In this same period of time my school paid a lot of attention to the fact that I grew a lot. They saw it as me gaining weight. At this point I started thinking to myself that it was easier to be the one who was fat, than the one who was sexually abused. It was just so much easier to relate to.” Nadja has recently started to receive treatment. On her way home after the session to men walk by her on the sidewalk: “Even if I received 1300 euros I would never fuck that,” one said loudly to the other as they were passing Nadja. Just hours before in treatment Nadja had opened up, and told about the abuse for the first time in her life. “I was judged so much by my female friends in school for not being like them and not caring about things they care.I think maybe when I was younger,I wished more I could just be like everyone else because then things would be easier.it’s not because I have a problem being different. the problem is people’s judgmental way of thinking.” Frei, 22, is a transgender person.He sensed that he did not feel comfortable with the gender assigned to him at birth and didn’t have any idea about being transgender by the time he was 13. Something inside him always felt different. Struggling with depression in his childhood made him feel vulnerable among his peers.It was not until October 2018 that he chose to live as he had always felt; like a man. At 20, he was diagnosed with bipolar and ADHD. Each year around 20 children are born with Down’s Syndrome in Denmark. Milika Holten is one of them. Milika’s mother, Stinne Holten, did not know about the diagnosis until Milika was born. Troels lives temporarily for four months at a folk school, named Ubberup Højskole, that focuses on weight loss and wellbeing. He hopes to lose some weight, but more importantly to find some sort of balance. “I dream of having a better balance within. And to understand why I do what I do. When I am in imbalance I am stressed out and in a bad mood. I don’t have any energy. I shut down completely and feel like my life is passing by. I don’t want to use any more of my life feeling like that.” Troels has always been overweight and has also suffered from depression. “It was like nothing mattered and I had no energy. At one point I was thinking about suicide. One day I was sitting in the classroom starring at a brick in the wall underneath the blackboard. I sat like that the whole day not noticing at all what anyone was saying. I was just tired, felt like a failure and did not know what to do “. The mother and wife of Liviu Pop are being comforted by friends and family minutes before they say their final goodbyes. Liviu Pop was murdered by the mafia on the 16th of October 2019 when he was patrolling the forest. During the last couple of year’s more than a 100 forest activists and rangers have been assaulted, and 6 have been killed in the fight for preserving the forest. Former DMJX exchange student, Yehyun Kim from University of Missouri won the Portfolio Category and thereby the title as College Photographer of Year.
Each year, 500-plus students from 120 colleges and universities from all over the world enter the College Photographer of the Year competition.
The competition is divided into two main divisions – one for Still Pictures and one for Multimedia. The 16 Still Picture categories were judged from Friday the 23rd till Thursday the 29th of October. The Multimedia categories are being judged from Saturday the 31st of October to Monday the 2nd of November.
